IMPACT195 School of Ministry Pastor, Scott Wessell, tackles one of the biggest lies in this week's devo in his series, "Lies that Christians believe." The lie is that God wants you to be happy. Unfortunately, that thought seems so sensible that most people don't ever question the veracity of it. In 1 Peter 1:16 God commands us, "Be Holy for I am Holy." God doesn't want you to be happy, he wants you to be holy and when you're holy you experience true happiness. You see, we chase happiness around like it's a destination but it's not. Happiness is not a destination but a byproduct, it's something that you experience as you try to get to a different destination. Jesus is that destination. The more you're conformed into the likeness of Jesus, the more true happiness you'll experience but if happiness is you goal you'll find that it's elusive, it's hard to hold onto. God doesn't want you to be happy, he wants you to be holy so that you can experience true happiness; the kind that cannot be taken from you.
